Barry McGuire en The Mama’s and the Papa’s

Barry McGuire over “California Dreamin ‘”:

“Well, it was my track. It was going to be my next single release. And when they were doing my backup vocals, they started doing a counterpoint with (sings) “all the leaves are brown, and the sky was grey,” well that all came together on my recording session. And they heard it and thought, “that’s the sound. That’s what we want, that counterpoint thing.” Then John asked me if they could release “California Dreamin’” as their first single, and I said, “Hey, you wrote the tune. Do whatever you want.” So they did. They took my voice off, and put Denny’s voice on, and they had that flute player guy come in and [he] did a toodle-toodle in the middle of the song. And it was a monster hit for them.”

De winter van 1963 is een bijzonder sombere winter. Michelle Phillips uit Californië woont samen met John Phillips. Ze zijn een jaar gehuwd. Hij is 28, zij 19.

‘sNachts loopt John met zijn gitaar rond in hun kleine optrek. Op een ochtend vraagt hij Michele om hem wat te helpen met het uitwerken van een song.

All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray
I’ve been for a walk on a winter’s day
I’d be safe and warm if I was in L.A.
California dreamin’, on such a winter’s day.

“California Dreamin ‘” gaat over het verlangen naar huis, naar een zonnige plek in Californië.

John Phillips :  “The words ‘California dreamin’ kept going through my mind,” John Phillips recalled in an interview before his death. “I stared working on some chords for the song. And I went through more chord progressions and things that fit the melancholy of the song.”

Michelle herinnert zich levendig hoe ze wakker werd en hoe John haar vroeg om hem wat te helpen. Hij hield er niet van alleen te schrijven. Een paar dagen ervoor wandelden se samen langs St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Michelle schreef het tweede couplet :

Stopped in to a church I passed along the way
Well, I got down on my knees and I pretend to pray
You know the preacher liked the cold, he knows I’m going to stay
California dreamin’, on such a winter’s day.

Het lied was niet onmiddellijk een hit, verre van zelfs. Toen John het nummer schreef met een beetje hulp van Michelle speelde hij in een folkgroep “The New Journeymen” met banjospeler Marshall Brickman.

Wanneer Brickman de groep verliet vroeg het koppel Phillips aan Denny Doherty, lid van de Halifax Three en de Mugwumps, om mee te zingen met hen. Doherty op zijn beurt, bracht Cass Elliot mee, eveneens lid van de Mugwumps.
De groep was geboren, nu nog een naam vinden.

 

Het viertal brak pas door toen zanger Barry McGuire, die werkte aan een album voor Dunhill Records. Hij introduceerde hen bij Lou Adler, producer en directeur van Dunhill.
Adler luisterde naar het viertal en werd bijna omvergeblazen door hun wonderlijke harmonie.

Denny Doherty herinnert zich : “So, there we are at Western Recorders, Lou Adler in the booth. We sing him California Dreamin’ and this voice comes out of talkback: ‘You got any more?’ Got any more! Sure we got more! We sang him everything we had. We sang him ‘Straight Shooter,’ ‘Monday, Monday,’ ‘Go Where You Want To Go.’ And this voice from the booth just kept asking for more. ‘What else you got? What else you got?’ Finally Cass says: ‘That’s all we got. What do you think?’ And he says: ‘I think we can do business.’”

 

Barry McGuire zegt : “Lou heard them sing, and he thought Michelle was cute. That was his main comment after hearing them sing: ‘Who’s the blonde?’ But he did like their sound and they sang backup on my second album for me. They told me that that’s where they actually found their counterpoint. That’s when their sound really came together, singing backup for me.”

Adler zei dat dit het gevoelen van George Martin moet zijn geweest wanneer de Beatles voor hem stonden.

Omdat Adler zo enthousiast was gaf Phillips de song “California Dreamin” aan Barry McGuire. De Mama’s en Papa’s zonger het achtergrond koortje.

Barry zegt dat, terwijl ze de opnames deden voor zijn versie, de groep pas besefte dat ze echt wat konden. John vroeg Barry of de song ook door hen kon worden uitgebracht als groep. Barry ging akkoord.
De song werd niet opnieuw opgenomen. De stem van McGuire werd gewist en die van Denny kwam in de plaats. De harmonica werd gewist voor een fluitsolo.

De song werd gereleased in 1965 maar deed niets. Los Angeles (Californië bij uitstek) gaf geen kik. Uiteindelijk kwam de song op de radio in Boston en vandaar begon de verovering van eerst de US en daarna de wereld.

Wanneer John Phillips ook het Monterey Pop Festival mee produced gaan alle registers open. Ondertussen heeft hij ook “San Francisco” geschreven voor zijn ex-Journeymen vriend Scott McKenzie.
