Charles Segar – Key to the Highway (1940)

“Key to the Highway” werd voor het eerst opgenomen door Charlie Segar in 1940. Segar, ook gekend als “the Keyboard Wizard Supreme,” was een Pianist uit Pensacola, FL die al van in de twenties in Chicago verbleef.

Hij nam de song op twee maanden voor Jazz Gillum en een vol jaar voor coauteur Big Bill Broonzy en in een geheel ander arrangement (12 bar blues). Segar speelt dit op piano, Gillum op harmonica en Broonzy op gitaar.

“Key to the Highway” wordt echter meestal gezien als een William ‘Big Bill’ Broonzy compositie. .

Broonzy zegt : “Some of the verses he [Charlie Segar] was singing it in the South the same time as I sung it in the South. And practically all of blues is just a little change from the way that they was sung when I was a kid . . . You take one song and make fifty out of it . . . just change it a little bit.”
