Jim Reeves nam de song op die een van de grootste country music’s hits zou worden nadat hij een versie van Billy Brown († 10 januari 2009) hoorde.

Het lied, geschreven door Joe en Audrey Allison, was geinspireerd door de moeilijke telefoonverbinding tussen de twee. Audrey had een zachte stem en was niet in staat om luid genoeg te spreken zodat haar echtgenoot haar kon horen. Joe zou zijn vrouw hebben gevraagd de hoorn wat dichter bij haar mond te houden. Zo stom, maar waar !!!.

Het was een vrij eenvoudig lied, met Floyd Cramer op piano, Bob Moore op bas gitaar en Jim Reeves zelf als lead-gitarist.

“Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone/Let’s pretend that we’re together all alone/I’ll tell the man to turn the juke box way down low/And you can tell your friend there with you he’ll have to go.”
