Ze werd geboren als Eleanor "Dora" Goldberg, in een Joodse familie in Joliet, Illinois. Ze begon professioneel op te treden in de vaudeville in Chicago op 18-jarige leeftijd. Ze toerde van San Francisco, Californië naar New York City en werd een ster zowel op de vaudeville circuit als op Broadway.
Met haar eerste echtgenoot trad ze op in de "Ziegfeld Folllies" revue tot de eerste wereldoorlog.
Na de oorlog nam ze een groot aantal grammofoonplaten op voor Victor en Columbia. Van 1924 tot 1928, met haar begeleider en pianist Louis Alter, die later populaire nummers als "Manhattan Serenade", "Nina Never Knew" en "Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans" zou schrijven.
Ze stierf in 1928 aan kanker tijdens de operatie.
