Met “Paths of Victory” belanden we in het meer obscure werk van Dylan.
Dylan nam dit nummer op voor de plaat “The times they are a-changing”, doch het nummer bleef in de kast liggen. Pas met de “Bootleg Series 1-3” kwam deze outtake boven water.

In de liner notes voor “Bootleg Series 1-3” wordt deze song “possibly the most Guthriesque song that Woody never wrote“ genoemd.

Dylan begon met deze song rond 1962, en hij werkte een paar strofes af voor Broadside. Voor Witmark nam hij een demo op.

Ik leerde de song kennen via een “Bob Dylan Songbook” (uitgegeven door Witmark en Sons) dat ik kocht begin 1966 in Gent, waar ik toen studeerde.

Het Songbook stond vol met nummer die Dylan op dat moment nog helemaal niet had uitgebracht, zoals “Eternal Circle”, “Seven Curses”, “Lay down your weary tune” en deze “Paths of Victory”. Ik leerde de song spelen zonder ooit het origineel te hebben gehoord.

Maar waar haalde Dylan zijn inspiratie vandaan ?

We gaan terug in de tijd naar 1926…

De originele opname is van Uncle Dave Macon (1926) (Vocalion)
Het is een blanke hymne geïnspireerd door John Bunyan’s boek The Pilgrim’s Progress, gepubliceerd in 1678. De auteur was een Methodist preacher (1767-1848). Fiddlin’ John Carson gebruikte dezelfde melodie al in ’25 in zijn harde boerenleven song Honest Farmer.

Waarchijnlijk kende Dylan de Carter Family versie van de song.
